The Real Next Doctor...

The BBC have announced the next Doctor Who actor.

It's Matt Smith. He's currently on the ABC on Tuesday nights in Party Animals. He's the quiet, thoughtful one in that, so it's not a great predictor of how he'll play the extroverted Doctor. This Doctor Who Confidential interview is probably a better guide:

He certainly seems to have the eccentric energy required.

And now the real question: what will his costume be?

If it was up to me, I'd play up Smith's pretty indie-pop style: a tweed jacket with leather patches on the sleeves, a knitted vest, open collar shirt and corduroy trousers. The classic 1950's Chemistry teacher look. Maybe even a scarf. He's certainly got enough neck for one.

Hmmm. I'm not enthused. But then, I didn't like David Tennant from what I saw, either. I guess it's the new wave, too, to hire only younger guys?

he is a bit too pretty

More of a problem for me is, he just seems too *young*. Tennant only barely manages to capture the Timelord "Everyone I love dies" thing.. can't imagine that with this guy.

But... I like the pretty and the cheeky, and I think sharplittlteeth nails it with his fashion tips. Guess we'll see. :)

seriuouslah, the doctor gets younger. stop applying your human predjudices to his gallifreyan physique.

DAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
SPOILER.......... *dies*

At last I have no idea what he looks like.
(Why did I check LJ??)

But your costume idea sounds to me like McCoy's second combo.

When you've lived for so long, seen so many different things, been through so much...what in the nine hells would you choose to have a haircut like that??

Is it because he just doesn't care anymore?

I hope the next doctor after him looks less like a circus freak than the last two.:(

The doctor hasn't had a neat/normal haircut for decades, so that's not an issue for me.
But, I think he looks and sounds far too young for a role with such gravitas -- the Doctor doesn't have teenage/early20s-angst.
I've only seen him in one thing (caught an episode of "Party Animals" while channel-flicking during the week) and he plays a bit of a wet-blanket character...and looking at the interview I now wonder how much of that wet blanket was him and how much was acting. I think he'll need a lot of stick from the Director to start with, and think it's good that he said he'll be working for months to get into the character...

No bloody side cut fringes in the Tardis. NONE. HE IS BANNED.

My goodness, he's all neck!

I had read a rumor that they were considering Catherine Zeta-Jones to be the first female. I didn't pay it much heed, as she's far too glamorous for the role and would cost too much, but the story did amuse me
