Novelties

I'm writing a novel, yeah? Dark urban fantasy, with a humourous edge. Sort of Neverwhere meets The Office.

Anyway- my plan was to have at least the first chapter done in time for Continuum, so I could show it to anyone and everyone there, in the hope that when it's finished and sent out to publishers, someone might remember it and not just throw it to the bottom of the slush pile never to be read.

The first chapter is now done, and I'm seeking comments.

Interested? Got the spare time to read 5,000 words and get your comments back to me early next week? Then email me and I'll send you the file. (Although, for fairly obvious reasons, I'm only showing it to people I know at this stage.)

You can mail me at davidw@gothic.net.au

Thanks.

I still remember being disappointed at not being able to play the game set in skyscrapers at night. Send it to me, but I may not be able to answer for a while...

I most certainly want to read it
but since my PC at home has gone bang I don't think I could give it the time or energy it deserves.

Hi David, this is Talie. Congrats on winning the AHWA competition!

I don't yet have the details, but my Role of the Editor class will be undertaking manuscript appraisals as our major project this semester - possibly you would consider an appraisal of part of your novel?

If you would like me to, I'll pass your e-mail on to my teacher, and you could get the submission details from her. I'm not privy to the fine print, but I'm sure there would be some quite serious conditions placed on the editing class to protect your copyright.

Thanks! It was good to catch up with you at the Con.

I'd be more than happy to have your class go over my novel. And thankyou for the offer. But at this stage there's not a whole lot to be gone over - a first chapter, assorted fragments, and an outline I'm still not happy with.

So... that wouldn't really be enough, would it? Or would it?

By all means pass on my address (davidw@gothic.net.au) to your teacher, and I can talk to them, if you think it's worthwhile.

I think the appraisal is for a ten thousand word manuscript - but if I pass your e-mail on, you can see if it's something you'd maybe like to keep on file as a developmental tool for next year. It doesn't hurt to have the contact. We have published novelists submitting manuscripts, so the standard of the process is high enough to be worth keeping in mind.

I'll be posting the guidelines to 'southern_horror' when I get them, so you always check them out there too.

I understand you met my great friend Deborah Crabtree at the AHWA launch. She's a great writer, and another person worth staying in contact with in terms of serious writing.
