Sep. 5th, 2005 06:47 pmFlew to Perth yesterday. Four hours in a metal cylinder, held up by nothing more that aerodynamics and high octane fuel.
As we left Melbourne, we climbed above the clouds. They spread out beneath us, wide and flat like an Antartic wilderness.
"It's beautiful," said my supervisor, who was flyng with me, "I just don't think humans were meant be up here."
She's scared of flying. it took three glasses of wine and some Buffy DVDs to calm her nerves.
Me, I don't mind. Sure, Economy class is mostly just like being on a bus. But that moment of take-off, when the engines kick in, when air flows over the wings like liquid, when a gigantic tube of metal suddenly slips into the sky... that's just magnificent.
We may not be meant to fly. But it's beautiful up there. Which is exactly why we should.
