It's the last Nick Cave album I'll acknowledge :) I wouldn't blame you if you'd given up before that. Since the line "I don't believe in an interventionist God" he's been dead to me. (Except I bought The Lyre of Orpheus. And then wished I hadn't.)
"I don't believe in an interventionist God" he's been dead to me.
You and me both. I'm right there with you. I love Murder Ballads (especially the last track -- iic it's a Dylan cover?) but Into My Arms was fucking awful and I've only really paid attention to the singles since (Grinderman aside), but he's just not for me anymore.
We're trying to puzzle out a set list. This is what we've got:
Sex Changes Missed Me Ampersand Astronaut [w/ string quartet] Have to Drive [ w/ string quartet] [new song - mattress] Coin Operated Boy Oasis [Vegemite song] [cover song - Regina Spektor? with the Jane Austen Arguement] Wintercoat [cover, w/ Paul Kelly] Henry Lee [with Mikelangelo and the 1 1/2 Night Stand, Paul Kelly and Mick Harvey] Leeds United [with Mikelangelo and 1 1/2 Night Stand] Runs In The Family [w/ string quartet] Exit Music (For A Film) [w/ string quartet]
To be fair, the title track is alright. But that's what I mean - for me, Nick Cave shouldn't be just 'alright'. It should be the disgusting delight of 'Scum', the storytelling of 'Jack's Shadow', the juddering beauty of 'Sunday's Slave', the despair of 'Knocking on Joe' or 'A Box for Black Paul'. This music was really formative to me, since my friend's big sister (who's now a pretty cool artist - Lyndal Walker) made me a mixed tape of Bad Seeds and Birthday Party when I was 14.
His later work just seems a bit ... easy listening.
I do tend to have cut-off points. The Cure has been dead to me since Disintegration.
Yes, my only disappointment is that the line she fudged was my favourite in the whole song (it is indeed its most poignant moment). But I could see she was pretty disappointed too, so she's forgiven :)
Let me know if you'd like a copy of the record. Radiohead have so much cash they're giving their albums away these days.
theres good stuff on later albums .. you gotta listen to it, and yeah its a bit more "easy" than angsty young heroin filled nick, but aint we all getting older ;p
there is a town is one of the best songs ever from nocturama, and I like into her arms.. god songs dont turn me off , blues gospel has always been one of his influences
Oh, God songs don't bother me in the slightest! It was just such a badly written line. I find that song really schmaltzy, to be honest.
Never for a minute do I think that artists should preserve the sound of their youth. It's important for their work to develop and mature. Which is why I stop listening at the point I stop liking it :)
