Saw this last night with andricongirl and freakflipmonkey.

Giant robots. Flying aces. Girl reporters.

It was pretty. It was fun. It reminded me a lot of Star Wars.

Like the original Star Wars, it's a loving tribute to the Pulp adventure serials of the 1930's. Like the recent Star Wars prequels, it was thick with computer animation and cardboard-thin with characters.

Okay. It was better than the Star Wars prequels. But still.

Jude Law did alright as the Sky Captain. Gwenyth Paltrow was stiff and mannered, and a put on this awful Katherine Hepburn accent.

Admittedly, the script didn't give them anything original to work with. And acting must be tough when it's just you and a big blue screen. And, like its Pulp inspirations, the movies is too busy racing from action scene to action scene to waste time on girly things like emotions.

But every now and then Law and Paltrow managed to bring some empathy and life to their characters, and you realise how much it's lacking in the rest of the film.

It's a pity.

Lord of the Rings, Spiderman, The Incredibles - all of these have shown you can make fantasy action movies with heart. And it's the lack of real heart that means Sky Captain is fun, but ultimately forgettable.

Don't get me wrong. You should see it. It looks incredible, plus there's giant robots and a ray-gun.

Just don't expect to be moved.
