I work in IT tech support. Cables are pretty much the bane of my existence. I spend half my working life crawling under desks to trace spaghetti-like network cables or unplug twisted and knotted power leads.
Wireless networking theoretically cuts out half that problem. Now researchers at MIT have announced the solution for the other half:
Wireless power.
The power is generated by two magnetically coupled resonators, one in the device, the other in the power transmitter. And because it uses magnets, it's meant to be harmless for humans.
It's not quite ready for production. But once it is, you'll never have to plug your iPod or mobile phone in again.
