Most people play because it’s fun, and good for your (mental) health.
Some people get hyper-competitive. They don’t play to win, they play to beat everyone else. Hence 18th-Century France, American high schools, and society ladies everywhere.
And some people just lack the talent. They don’t know the rules, they never learn the skills. Partly because the game doesn’t interest them. And partl because the rules are never clearly explained. You’re just supposed to pick them up as you go along.
I don’t have a real reason for posting this. Just a passing thought I wanted to pin down.
