About two months ago, my computer stopped being a hyper-powerful 2001-style black monolith, and became a tombstone with a power cord.

My fault. Tried to re-install Windows XP.

Fool.

So, for two months I have tweaked BIOS settings, swapped hard drive cables, harassed tech support and trawled Google. And every solution seemed perfect. And every solution failed.

Darkness enveloped me, the utter despair that only comatose tech can bring. I would stare at the motherboard, eyes bloodshot and tear-ridden, and fight down the urge to just reach out, to just caress the motherboard with my fingers... and thus melt all its circuits with static.

I tweaked. I harassed. I googled. Every solution seemed perfect. Every solution failed.

Until last night.

The disks spun. The stars aligned. The morphogenic fields coalesced.

And Windows XP reinstalled.

And I would sing and dance and sacrifice fattened calves to the gods in thanks. Except reinstalling XP wasn't even the problem I was trying to solve.

I'm just trying to get my new soundcard to work properly. And the manufacturers suggested reinstalling my OS would help.
