I watched a bit of Rage on Friday night. Nothing like crap music to make you feel old.

Because you start to doubt yourself. Is this what the kids like? Is this what fills them with hope and passion and longing? And if it is, why don't you feel it? Have you really become that grey and out of touch?

So it was something of a relief to pick up Dashboard Confessional's A Mark A Mission A Brand A Scar during a CD-shopping splurge on Saturday.

DC get lumped under the emo banner. I'm not really sure what that means. Us old folks would just call them college rock. The CD contains some fine and tender love songs, delivered with a twist of adolescent yearning, and just a dash of SoCal punk. It's not the Greatest Album In The Universe, Ever. But a gem like "Hands Down" chokes me up in a way that a legion of shaggy-haired new-rock bands plagiarising the Stooges never will.

The CD came with a bonus DVD. Some studio footage, some footage of Confessional's singer-songwriter Chris Carrabba playing solo acoustic sets. This is cool for two reasons. Firstly, you get to see Carrabba, whom I think is a bit of a spunk. In an overly sincere, straight-edge American sort of way. (Angelica disagrees). Secondly, you get to see the concert singalongs.

I'd read that Confessional shows are big singalongs. But I was still startled to see an audience of teenagers, faces naked with emotion, drown out the singer with his own words.

Startled, yet strangely pleased.

Amongst the other l3wt from the weekend was Curve's most recent album, Gift. Damn fine stuff. Fuzzed-up guitars, electro-industrial beats, and Toni Halliday's sexy, sexy, voice. It occurred to me that Garbage pretty much stole Curve's sound, and their thunder.

Although Garbage never got to play on the soundtrack while Buffy and Faith did the sexy dance.

Speaking of which... Every time I get some good new CDs, I get this burning desire to run some modern-day role-playing. Just so I can burn a cool soundtrack CD.

I'm a geek. I know. I've already called for volunteers to shoot me.

*stretches. yawns*

Okay. Time for a nap. I'm goingto see Dandelion Wine play later tonight. Should be good.
