Seriously. An Arizonan SWAT team are about to conduct feasibility studies into using capuchin monkies for reconaissance.

My first instinct is to laugh. My second is to worry about the animal rights issues - is it really humane to be sending an animal into dangerous situations? But is it really any different than using police dogs?


And andricongirl? Notice that the officer in charge of the project also builds reconaissance robots. Maybe he could combine the two. And the then world will tremble before ROBOT POLICEMONKEY!

So I was reading about the Australian security contractor that was killed in Iraq. And The Age has some quotes from another Australian security contractor about how dangerous Iraq is becoming.

Now, "security contractor" in these situations often as not is a euphemism for "mercenary". And I can't help thinking that talking up the dangers is good for business, if you're a mercenary. Maybe I'm just being cynical.

Anyway - the quoted contractor works for the AKE group. I poked around their website, and found a list of The Benefits To You provided by AKE's services. And among them is this:

Fulfilment of duty of care. You want to take care of your employees, in whom you’ve invested. Our results show that improved employee relations result from that commitment to protect them.

Really? Gosh.

I just wanted to be in on the research that produced those results.

Interviewer: "Do you prefer it when A) your boss lets people shoot you, or B) you boss does NOT let people shoot you."

Subject: "Ooo. Not really sure there, Bob. B?"
