We saw the Absinth Club burlesque review on Saturday night at the Spanish Club.

Ah yes - wormwood and nipple tassels.

The Spanish Club has a nice looking interior, all very Art Deco. But it was standing room only, hardly ideal for watching a show. It didn't help that they had tables down the front reserved for the sponsors and VIPs.

Still... there was jive dancing, hula-hooping, pantomime, MCs telling amusingly crap jokes, a butchershop quartet dismembering a body while singing about torching orphans, the Town Bikes doing their comedy dance routines, and guy in a Día de los Muertos mask pouring absinth over his head and setting fire to it.

Oh, and some dancers taking their clothes off.

The first few acts tried too hard to be sexy, and so came off as silly. It was only when the girls played up the silliness that it became sexy. (Well, fun. There's nothing particularly arousing about watching women take their clothes off on stage. Which is why I've never understood the appeal of strip clubs.)

Possibly my favourite dance was a Little Red Riding Hood routine.

She came out all demure in her red cape, to Nouvelle Vague's dreamy acoustic cover version of "Killing Moon". A wolf paw slid out from under her cape to paw her. At first she's shocked. Then she smiles. Disappears into a huddle under her cape. And emerges with her arm around the Wolf, who grins down at her.

The paw was glove on the dancer's hand. The Wolf was a puppet head attached to her forearm, the falling cape giving the illusion of his body. A clever bit of puppetry. Plus I've had a thing for Little Red Riding Hood ever since I saw The Company of Wolves at an impressionable age.

I'll admit this was my first burlesque, so I can't compare it to others. But I had a lot of fun.

Didn't drink any absinth, though, despite the event being sponsored by Green Fairy Absinth. That stuff is Czech.
