Saw Sunshine last night, the new movie from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland (the team that brought us 28 Days Later).
The Sun is dying. The Earth is freezing over. Seven years ago, the spaceship Icarus was sent to try and re-ignite the Sun with an enourmous bomb. But the Icarus disappeared, its mission incomplete. And so now the Icarus II has been sent. The film opens with the Icarus II approaching the "dead zone", where solar radiation drowns out any transmissions back to Earth.
The first two-thirds of this film are fantastic. Gritty hard sci-fi, played without the histrionics. And the shots of the Sun are just beautiful.
Unfortunately, the last section of the film is a let down. It's not bad. It's just confusing, a riot of jump cuts and dark shadows. And...
No. I've got more to say here. But it would contain spoilers. Ask me next time you see me.
What I will say is that it's a good film, spectacular to watch. Sure, the ending doesn't work as well as it could. But it's still interesting. And the first two acts are excellent.
