The Amazon.com order arrived yesterday: season one and two DVDs of Xena for [livejournal.com profile] andricongirl, and a copy of Maxx Barry's book Syrup for me.

Attentive readers may remember that I bought Barry's second novel, Jennifer Government, as present for Angelica, started reading it on the way home, and refused to hand it over until I had finished it. Which I did the next day.

He's good. Really good.

Melbourne boy, too.

Jennifer Government was a satire on the ethics of multinational companies. Syrup, his first novel, is another satire. Except this one's about marketing.

Barry has the first chapter from each novel up on his website. Go. Read them. That's the best way to get a feel for his style: fast, and funny and hooks you right in.

Syrup struck me as the better of the two books. The characters are stronger, and the end doesn't get bogged down the way Government did.

But they're both good. And funny. And you should read them.

Of course, I had to order my copy of Syrup from America, because it's out of print here. But that's no excuse for you.

You can borrow mine.
