Dec. 19th, 2003 06:28 pmSony have unveiled the QRIO, a bipedal robot.
Not only can it walk, it can dance, run and jump.
Which is a) really cute, and b) an incredibly fucking impressive piece of robotic engineering. There are other bipedal robots out there. But they all walk by very carefully keeping one foot on the ground at all times, and then keeping their wieght balanced over that foot. Which is slow. QRIO walks like a human.
Ok, so it's got the brain of a glorified Tamagotchi. But it's a real robot, that walks and runs on two legs. Go to their website, see how fluidly it moves.
We have a real bipedal robot. The 21st Century has finally started.
EDIT:
For a slightly less gobsmacked review of the QRIO, there's a neat little article on Flakmagazine, that points out the QRIO's inhibitive cost (about equal to a BMW), the lack of practical application (compare Sony's Playstation, Walkman, etc.), then wanders off via a slightly paranoid rant, to end up with the beautiful (if anthrocentric) line: "Nothing with a built-in carrying handle can ever truly be happy"
