Curmudgeon
Feb. 17th, 2004 11:13 pmIt occurs to me that I sound awfully curmudgeonly in my recent reviews of the more experimental arts. I've railed against the Mars Volta and their over-long guitar solos, and grumbled about Matthew Barney's surrealist films. I seem to be quick to critisize, and slow to praise.
It's not that I didn't enjoy these things. It just seems to be the way my thoughts work. If something is good, then it seems to me that it's obvious why it's good, rendering discussion obsolete.
But if something is bad, especially when it could have been good, my mind won't let it go. Why it was bad? How it could have been made better? Was it even actually bad, or was I just too stupid to get it?
