A Head Full of Southern Gothic
Aug. 13th, 2004 04:45 pmA few weeks back, I saw Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus at the film festival. It was all Lousianna swamps and banjo music.
Inspired, I downloaded some 16 Horsepower tracks to the iTunes playlist at work. And hearing Black Soul Choir brings pleasure to even the most frustrating day.
Now I'm two-thirds the way through Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berret. What started out as book about wealthy Southern eccentrics and small-town fueds has turned into a murder trial and voodoo. I've borrowed th Clint Eastwood film version to watch, too.
After that, probably Nick Cave's And the Ass Saw the Angel.
I'm in research-mode.
Don't get too excited. It's research for a roleplaying game. A Southern Gothic Buffy roleplaying game, no less.
Maybe I shouldn't mention that part in public.

Date: 2004-08-13 12:11 am (UTC)Film was... wishy washy. I do love Kevin Spacey, but it was VERY different to the book.
I couldn't read And the ass saw the angel. I suspect Mr Nick was on some good shit at the time.
I like your roleplaying ideas though ;-)
You may also want to check out the Vampire Slayer series of novels by Laurell K Hamilton. I have all of them. Heh.

And after that, maybe some Faulkner.
