Sapphism in Pop Music
Oct. 14th, 2008 10:00 amDon't get me wrong: I'm all for girl-on-girl snogging.
But does that Kate Perry "I Kissed A Girl" song shit you up the wall too?
We were discussing this on Saturday night. My problem is that the song sounds less like a genuine celebration of same-sex fun, and more like a cynical ploy for attention. It feels fake. The video clip doesn't help - all that underwear and contrived posing, with not a hint of actual desire.
Compare and contrast with, say, The Veronica's "Take Me On The Floor". Yes, it's bubblegum pop, with some incredibly dodgy haircuts in the video. But there's some real heat in the singing. When they sing "I wanna kiss a girl, I wanna kiss a boy", they actually sound like they mean it.
And that "dadada da dadadada" bit is pretty damn sexy, too.
