Anyone want to come see Star Trek with us tonight?

We're thinking dinner at the Terminus Hotel at about 6:30, then over to Victoria Gardens to see the 8:45pm session.

I've never really been a fan of Star Trek. Being stuck on a flight between Africa and England watching Generations didn't help.

But this new movie looks pretty good. Hell, Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton both gave it 4 stars.

I saw the trailer for the first time last night. I was all quirky-eyebrows and WTFing. Alana said she'd heard they'd sexed it up and packed in lots of action. Then she made the point: That's never been what she watched Star Trek for, and if she wanted sex and action she could watch any other damn film. I take her point. I am not moved to see it, I'm afraid.

The trailers play up the action and sexy young stars, but apparently there's lots of solid character drama in there.

But I'm not going to be offended by any changes, since I was never a fan of Star Trek. Every episode I've ever seen seemed to featured cheesy acting and a swirly energy field in space.

It's possible I've just had bad luck.

Sure, there was some of that - just like there was plenty of ham and cheese in old Who. But considering that there were what, 5 different Star Trek series? Some of which ran for 7 years? There was other stuff, too, and good stuff to boot.

Maybe I'm just one of those who gets irritated when they "modernise" old favourite classics. I really don't like David Tennant as The Doctor, although I did like the Christopher Ecclestone season.

No pooing! No pooing!

Hmm. Don't know why my head went to Arrested Development just then.
