Fooly Cooly!
Aug. 20th, 2003 01:09 pmAmongst the l3wt that A* and I scored last Friday was the first two DVDs of FLCL.
Even for anime, this show is weird.
Partly it’s the translation. The DVDs come with a little booklet explaining all the puns, double-meanings and cultural references. But it can’t really bridge the language gap.
So it’s partly the translation. But mostly it’s just weird.
A twelve year old boy. Who gets hit on the head by a bass guitar-wielding girl on a Vespa. The boy’s lumps turn into horns. Which he tries to hide in public. These horns sporadically discharge giant robots. Who fight. And meanwhile, the Vespa girl tries to seduce the boy’s father.
Nothing Freudian going on here. No sir.
But the jump cuts, battle scenes and panty shots are tied together with scenes of bittersweet adolescent loneliness and longing. The show feels like an epileptic’s seizure: trance-like moments of unearthly beauty that collapse into wild spasms.
I think I like it.
It’s too weird to be sure.

Date: 2003-08-19 11:16 pm (UTC)We won our copies in a nightclub raffle. But the DVDs are out through Madman Entertainment. Which means any store that has an anime sectio should have it. JB Hi Fi stocks it, for example.

Date: 2003-08-20 07:05 pm (UTC)As for the Pillows... I like that the DVD has subtitles for the theme song has both the translation and the transliteration. So you can pretend to sing along in Japanese.
