...and now everything I do seems like part of a computer game.

Initial impressions? Well, I like the dress up doll part, where you design your Sims. And I like the idea of working towards your character's Aspirations. What I don't like is all the micromanagement. I'm so busy telling my sims to eat and sleep that they don't have time to work towards their life goals.

And in completely unrelated news...

I knew it. I just knew it.

Your iPod can kill you.

I told you Apple were evil.

I've seen drivers here wearing headphones - not earpieces for mobiles but actual headphones - which scares me!

I just bought Sims Deluxe.

I know, I'm not with the times... but my laptop won't play SIMS 2, and I figured I may as well find out if I LIKE the game before I spend squillions on the new one.

Now I need the makin' magic expansion. :-)

my sims are intelligent!!
I don't have to tell them to eat and shit and shower etc.. they do all that by themselves... sleep does sometimes become an issue.

I think in SIMS 2 the default setting in the options section somewhere is to turn off intelligence for the sim. I can't remember what it's called exactly but it gives them a small amount of independant thought when the option is ON.
So give that a try and see what happens.
The downside is that when one particular sim of mine watches tv she'll always switch to a different channel no matter how many times I tell her to watch the yummy channel and gain cooking skills. *sigh*

No, no - they have free will. They're just really stupid. My teen Sim has a life goal of Knowledge, but she refuses to do any homework. That sort of thing.

I'm guessing I didn't min-max their personality traits well enough.

And telling them to clean up each and every plate individually gets a bit tedious.

I was hoping SIMS 2 would be a more intelligent game than the first. The first one, to be honest, gave me the creeps. You succeeded only by buying stuff, essentially. It felt like some kind of fucked up Orwellian training mechanism.

Read some reviews of 2, and it doesn't sound all that different. Is it?

Haven't actually played Sims 1.

The reason I bought Sims 2 was because it was pushing the whole "play through all the important moments in your character's lives, from birth to death" angle. And that sounded pretty cool.

So far, the "important moments" seem to be my teenage Sim throwing a tantrum whenever I ask her to do anything.

But I do like the character creation bit. You can make Dark Willow.

Yeah, yeah, I know... But if I wanted a real game I would have bought Star Wars.

The best SW movie I've seen since Empire, that.

I was totally addicted to Sims for about two days. It was kinda traumatic actually: the first game I started up, one of the characters burnt down the house in the first five minutes and died. The second time, another character went into a coma. He simply wouldn't wake up, and his energy was just slipping away.
But I do remember that after-Sims feeling, when everything is as if it's part of the game, and you wanna click on your housemate to make her clear the dishes away...
