There was an article in yesterday's The Age about food allegies.
It talked about peanut allergies, how even minute traces of peanuts can set it off, and how severe the reaction can be:
The young woman eating in a city-fringe restaurant knew the dangers so she first checked with the chef that the dish she ordered was free of nuts. She was given the all-clear. But, soon after eating, her immune system set off a rush of histamine that made her face swell and constricted her airways, making it hard to breathe. This severe allergic reaction triggered a cardiac arrest, causing brain damage. She now lives in a nursing home, totally dependent on others.
So this is me shutting up about my wussy little food intolerances. Stomach upsets aren't quite inthe same league as brain damage.

Date: 2004-10-23 09:51 pm (UTC)I've got an allergy to peanuts (all nuts, actually) and whilst my allergy isn't quite as bad as some I've still nearly died from it. But it really shits me when I don't see proper food hygiene practices in places like sandwich bars where they'll use the same knife for the margarine, peanut butter, Vegemite, etc. They're practically begging for someone to take them to court over it.
Anyway, heh...
