I've been carrying a seed around with me for the last six years.
I picked it up at my Worst Job Ever, programming training applications at a multimedia start-up. That makes the job sound kinda cool. It wasn't. The training applications were for accountants, the deadlines were too tight, the overtime was just ridiculous, and the boss was a dick.
It was bad enough that I found myself stuck at work at midnight on a Saturday. But when the tech-writer's 10 year old daughter was also stuck there, because the tech writer was a single mum and couldn't find a babysitter, I realised that the job was just plain fucked. So I quit.
Only two good things came out of that job. First, that's where I met freakflipmonkey. Second, I picked up a seed.
Not a literal seed. A mental seed. An idea for a novel.
And for the last six years I've been carrying that seed around, trying to work out how to make it grow. Frankly, for a lot of that time I thought it was dead. But in the last month it has not only germinated, but is shooting up before my eyes.
And, frankly, I think it will rock. Like The Office meets Neverwhere.
So, the plan is to write the first chapter in time for Continuum. Which will give me a reason to be there beyond being a fanboy.
